MAT1101 ST: Asking Questions and Solving Prob

This course aims to make mathematical problem solving less scary and more fun, and to help students see how new mathematics is generated. The course is experiential, with an emphasis on experimentation, risk, and creativity. We will focus on the process of solving problems, so arriving at correct solutions will not be important. We will learn problem solving tools, apply those tools to problems, and recognize those tools used in other people’s solutions. We will also practice generating mathematical questions. Class time will be spent asking questions, solving problems, and analyzing solutions in a workshop / studio / lab setting. Students will select from a wide variety of problems and topics at varying mathematical levels. Credits: 1.000
