HUM3051 Film, Culture and Identity

This course will examine the cultural implications of film form, as well as film style, by observing, discussing, and writing about cinema in its aesthetic forms, its narrative tactics, and its patterns of production and reception. The course will also examine how film manifests cultural, political, and economical power dynamics. Students will explore the ways that film shapes and orders our perceptions by determining how we engage with art as well as life. For example, students will explore the ways that films reflect as well as influence our understanding of class, gender, disability and ethnicity. It is the intention of the course to create and encourage modes of inquiry that allow students to critically evaluate their aesthetic and conceptual responses to film. Students must have completed three courses at the 2000 level, with grades of C or higher, as prerequisites for this course. Prerequisites may be waived at the discretion of the instructor.
