MUS1041 Sp Top: Music Appreciation


This course will examine music in America in its various styles and forms: colonial secular and sacred music; 18th and 19th century work songs; spirituals; popular songs and dances; minstrel music; folk songs; American Indian/tribal music; music of the Gilded age; Tin Pan Alley; gospel; American classical music; ragtime; the blues; 1920s jazz; musical theater and film musicals; The Great American Songbook; swing music; postwar bebop; orchestral film music; rhythm and blues; bluegrass, country and western; Latin influences; rock ‘n roll; and, finally, funk, metal and hip-hop. This course will also view the development of music in America in the context of colonial times, the foundation of the Republic, and through the influence of slavery, immigration, westward expansion, prohibition, the Great Depression, World Wars, the Cold War and technological advancements.
