LIT2025 ST: New England Writers

Here in the heart of New England we will explore the question of whether or not we can claim a tradition of “New England Literature”, and if so, what distinguishes it? “New England Writers” is historically expansive in scope and may consider writers from the colonial period to the present. A wide range of themes and issues are treated in the works of the writers we will discuss, including questions of personal identity, regional history and geography, and the cultures of New England. The writers will themselves represent a diversity of identities and backgrounds. Can we, in the scope of this plenty, discern a unifying idea/narrative or theme that distinguishes these authors with a sense of place? What does living and working in this place contribute to the work of these writers? Students will learn about the literary forms utilized by the writers considered in class, the history and context of the specific works under discussion, and methods of literary analysis to address the topics and themes raised in the texts.
