LIT2015 ST: The Graphic Novel

The graphic novel is a medium of versatility and impact. LIT2015 examines both the history of this emergent form and its place in the world of contemporary literature. As we read and study works of graphic fiction and non-fiction, we will learn the terminology and concepts that are key to understanding and analyzing them. We will apply close reading techniques in exploring literary elements such as plot, characterization, setting, point of view, and dramatic irony. We will learn to recognize and describe the graphic features essential to the format, concepts which include closure, identification, and transition. Secondary sources will help us to examine the graphic novel through political, social, and cultural lenses as we decide for ourselves whether it deserves consideration alongside more traditional literary forms and if certain works of graphic fiction and non-fiction achieve the status of great literature.
