NSC3011 Writing in the Sciences

Skill with written communication is critical for success in natural and computer sciences. In this course, students will be introduced to and given practice in identifying and writing a variety of forms of discourse used in natural and computer sciences, such as abstracts, peer-review publications, cover letters, grant applications, technical papers, requirements and design specifications, and software user instructions. Students will learn to identity the specific audience for each type of document, practice evaluating quality, and produce technical documents. Through critical readings, work with peers, and guided practice, they will develop the time-management and writing skills needed to communicate effectively in academic and in professional settings via a variety of assignments targeted to their specific needs: assignments will be tailored for natural vs. computer science students.
