LIT2015 Graphic Novel The graphic novel is a medium of versatility and impact. LIT2015 examines both the history of this emergent form and its place in the world of contemporary literature. Students will read and critically analyze works of graphic fiction and non-fiction applying the terminology and concepts introduced. In class discussions and written assignments, students will examine how elements such as setting, character, point-of-view, plot, and dramatic irony interact with prominent features of sequential art such as identifications, closure, and transition to produce reading experiences that are singular and often powerful. Secondary sources assigned will explore the graphic novel through political, social, and cultural lenses. Students will decide for themselves whether the graphic novel deserves consideration alongside more traditional literary forms and if certain works of graphic fiction and non-fiction achieve the status of great literature.
