LIT3032 Studies in the Novel: Jane Austen This course will examine the historical and literary context and enduring popularity of the works of Jane Austen. Students will read 4 of Austen’s published novels as well as selected juvenilia, letters, analysis, and critical commentary and watch several film adaptations of Austen’s work. Questions we will explore include: Why is Jane Austen considered by many to be the greatest English novelist? What themes and cultural issues in her novels hold relevance for us today? The course will combine lecture and discussion, with an emphasis on critical analysis and response. Students will do research and share their findings with the class. We will examine Austen’s use of language and her distinctive narrative style, her rich characterizations and use of irony, her representations of romance, of 18th-century gender norms and social class restrictions, and her treatment of enduring cultural themes and questions. Major graded assignments will include two papers, a film/novel comparison project, and a final in-class written exam. Credits: 3
