SOC3013 ST: Community Development

This class introduces students to how people cooperate at the local level to maintain and improve community well-being. It is a theoretical and a practical introduction to local democracy, civic engagement, and the social forces affecting local communities. Students will learn about the importance of democracy as a tool for solving a class of problems that can neither be solved by markets nor the state, but which require effective local cooperation. Attention will also be given to how communities build their capacity to deal with crises. The course itself requires active engagement with community groups so that students can learn first-hand how public bodies and non-profit organizations function to enable local problem-solving.
