LIT3017 ST:Fiction in Context Fiction in Context will explore novels based on historical events or times, digging into the actual history, social and political trends, and even some science of the time, basically taking a deep dive into the world of the book to better understand where it came from and how fiction can enhance our understanding of history by imaging how those involved may have felt and thought. The central novels for this course are by authors recognized for capturing the spirit of the times they write about. They are The Innocent, by Ewan McEwan, which features an American and British collaboration to build a spy tunnel under East Berlin during the Cold War; The Farming of Bones by Edwidge Danticat, a fictional account of a Haitian woman trying to escape the Parsley Massacre in the Dominican Republic in 1937; A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens story of the French Revolution, and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The course will include shorter readings from other disciplines, some literary criticism, film, and interviews. Credits: 3.000
