SS4011 Diversity Psychology This seminar-style course explores the psychology of social diversity and guides students to speak, write, and reason as members of the psychological community. World-wide globalism, fueled by forces such as open trade practices, unprecedented mobility, and Internet communication, has increased diversity and awareness of diversity. In this course, students will explore diversity in the United States, studying minority group, majority group, and mixed identity psychology. Using this knowledge, students will analyze key psychology topicssuch as mental healthfrom a diversity angle, asking how standard notions change when looked at from cross-cultural vantage points. Throughout the course, emphasis will be on the experiences and perspectives of groups that may be left out of mainstream discourse. These include racial and ethnic minorities, sexual identity minorities, religious minorities, persons with lower socio-economic status, and persons with neurodiversity that may manifest as a disability. Students will be asked to read an interdisciplinary selection of books and articles, lead a seminar session, write an autobiographical paper, and write a research article following disciplinary conventions in psychology. Students must have completed a 2000 or 3000 level psychology course, with a grade of C or higher as one of the prerequisites for this course, as well as the Advanced Writing and Interdisciplinary Seminar requirements, with grades of C or higher.
