The Associate of Science in Biology (AS-BIO) is designed to promote scientific literacy, stimulate intellectual curiosity, and provide a solid foundation in biological sciences. The program fosters an understanding of the role and relevance of biology in the modern world, encouraging students to critically evaluate concepts and ideas using scientific evidence.

Faculty members bring diverse academic backgrounds to the classroom, with specializations in human physiology, environmental studies, human ecology, biology, biology education, chemistry, and biochemistry. This diversity enhances the learning experience, preparing students to become informed and productive members of society and equipping them with the skills needed for further studies or careers in the biological sciences.

Upon completion of the Associate of Science in Biology degree, students will be able to

  • Describe the role of evolution by means of natural selection as the mechanism for biological diversity.
  • Describe how cells are the smallest structural and functional unit of all living organisms.
  • Describe atomic structures and chemical interactions.
  • Interpret data using quantitative reasoning skills.
  • Differentiate the scientific mode of inquiry from non-scientific modes of inquiry.
  • Demonstrate basic proficiency in laboratory skills and techniques.

To earn the Associate of Science in Biology degree, students must complete 60 credits.
