The Bachelor of Arts in History (BA-HIST) is for students intrigued by the stories, people, and events of the past. Students take a variety of courses to learn about the past and its lessons for today, while developing versatile skills that employers look for in an information economy. Through coursework in the major, students refine essential skills such as finding and interpreting credible information, presenting complex ideas, writing clearly, completing long-range projects, and working effectively with diverse groups.
Upon completion of the B.A. in History degree, students will be able to:
- Analyze and think critically about historical sources.
- Identify and evaluate diverse and under-represented voices in history.
- Employ writing and oral communication skills expected in the field of history.
- Articulate the complexities of human behavior, making connections between history and other disciplines and subject areas.
- Assess how history is interpreted and used in contemporary contexts, recognizing the implications of bias and incomplete information.
- Highlight the practical applications of historical skills and methods in professional settings.
To earn the B.A. in History degree, students must complete 121 credits.

Major Requirements
HIS1011 Humanities I: Anc & Med West Cult OR HIS1012 Humanities II: Renaissance to Present OR HIS1024 Global History II HIS1021 American Experience I: To 1865 OR HIS1022 American Experience II: 1865 - Present HIS3018 INT4000 Interdisc Studies Capstone I (grade of C or higher required for major) INT4001 Interdisciplinary Studies Capstone WRT3011 Advanced Writing (grade of C or higher required for major) History-related electives requirements - Students take two 1000 - 2000 level courses in HIS
- Students take one 1000 - 2000 level course in Humanities (HIS, HUM, LIT, PHI, or REL)
- Students take one 1000 - 2000 level course in Social Sciences (ANT, POL, SOC, or PSY)
- Students take two 3000+ level courses in HIS
- Students take one 3000+ level course in Humanities (HIS, HUM, LIT, PHI, or REL)
