Environmental Studies Minor

A minor in Environmental Studies is interdisciplinary in nature and requires 21 credits, with a 4 credit science foundational course at the 1000 level, the 3 credit EN 2131 Environmental Literature course, 11 credits in Environmental Studies coursework at the 2000 and 3000 levels, and a strong Environmental Studies focus in the 3 credit capstone course that is required for the B.A. in Liberal Studies.

Required Courses (10 credits)

Choose one of the following NS1000 courses:

  • NS1021 Introduction to Biology: Organisms and Environment (4 credits)
  • NS1701 Principles of Biology I (4 credits)
  • NS1311 Introduction to Geology (4 credits)

and both

  • EN2132 Environmental Literature (3 credits)
  • IS4001 Interdisciplinary Studies Capstone (environmental studies as the focus)  (3 credits)  

Elective Courses (11 credits minimum).  At least two must be at the 3000 level and one must be Natural Science

  • HU3511 Environmental History (3 credits)
  • HU3531 Nature and Culture (3 credits)
  • NS2041 Natural History of New England (4 credits)
  • NS2044 Field Studies in Wildlife Conservation (3 credits)   
  • NS2051 Aquatic Ecology and Water Pollution (4 credits)
  • NS2052 Field Ecology (4 credits)
  • NS2221 Environmental Science (4 credits)
  • NS3051 Winter Ecology (3 credits)
  • NS3501 Principles of Sustainability (3 credits)
