Life Sciences, A.S.

The Associate of Science in Life Science (AS-LS) degree at Landmark College focuses on hands-on scientific inquiry to give students the ability to acquire essential knowledge in the life sciences, conduct and analyze research based on principles of scientific inquiry, apply scientific knowledge to analyze real world problems and issues, develop useful skills for working within a life sciences field, and to communicate scientific content clearly and effectively. Landmark College Life Science majors choose from one or two strands, health science or environmental science, so they can begin to focus on a career while gaining a solid foundation in the sciences.

To earn the AS-LS students must complete 61 credits which includes the general education core (18 credits not met by major requirements), 34 credits of additional major requirements, and 9 credits of open electives

General Education Requirements: 31 credits

18 credits plus 13 credits of major requirements that also fulfill general education requirements:

WRT1011 Composition and Rhetoric 3 credits
WRT1012 Research and Analysis 3 credits
EDU1011 Perspectives in Learning or EDU1001 Foundations in Learning 3 credits
COM1011 Introduction to Communication 3 credits
Social Science (ANT, ECN, POL, PSY, SOC) 3 credits
Interpersonal Communication / Creative Expression (ART, BUS, COM, CER, CRW, DRW, JRN, MUS, PHO, PNT, THE, VID) 3 credits

Major Requirements: 34 credits

11 credits of Biology:

BIO1521 Principles of Biology I (also fulfills general education Natural Science requirement) 4 credits
BIO1522 Principles of Biology II 4 credits
BIO2041 Bioethics (also fulfills general education Humanities requirement) 3 credits

8 credits of Chemistry:

CHE1521 Principles of Chemistry I (4 credits)
CHE1522 Principles of Chemistry II (4 credits)

6 credits of Mathematics:

MAT1641 College Algebra (Also fulfills Gen Ed math requirement) 3 credits
MAT2621 Applied Statistics or higher MAT course (Math Level 6 or higher - Also fulfills the gen ed Quantitative Reasoning requirement) 3 credits

1 credit Career Seminar:

NSC1100 Life Sciences Career Seminar (1 credit)

8 credits - Focus Area Choice:

Must complete BOTH courses in either Environmental Science or Health Sciences
