EN3102 Studies in the Novel In this 3000-level course students will gain an understanding of the novel as a literary genre while studying novels that represent a particular moment in history or a particular sub-genre or theme. A period-based version of the course will include an examination of the historical and cultural influences on the novels of a specific time period (example: post-9/11 novels). A theme-based version of the course will examine a specific theme or sub-genre of the novel that is not necessarily tied to one time period (example: crime fiction, from Poe to Paretsky). While analyzing individual novels, students will investigate how they are connected by common elements, such as historical/cultural context, literary movement, narrative technique, sub-genre, or theme. Students will participate in a seminar setting consisting of class discussions and presentations, with an emphasis on critical reading and writing. Written assignments will include short informal responses as well as several formal essays of literary analysis and synthesis. Students must have completed three courses at the 2000 level, one of which is a 2000 level literature course, with grades of C or higher, as prerequisites for this course. Credits: 3
