PE1330 Introduction to Therapeutic Riding

This introductory course that may be taken only once in the Physical Education Department provides an overview of Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies (EAAT) with its history, organization, principles, and procedures. To be clear, it is the rider and not the equine involved in Therapeutic Riding. Thus, Landmark students observe instructors teaching riders and occasionally instruct on their own. The course emphasis focuses on how equines benefit people of all ages and abilities, particularly those with learning differences or other disabilities. Students will learn to assess riders for experiences that will be safe, fun, and beneficial according to the riders’ needs. This course includes examination of the organization and administration of Therapeutic Riding Programs as well as evaluating Therapeutic Riding activity facilities. Classes are held in a standard classroom and with hands-on practicum at the stable: observing EAAT lessons, leading lessons on their own, and helping riders. Course may not be repeated. Classes will be held on Tuesdays at both the Landmark campus and also Southern Vermont Therapeutic Riding Center at Winchester Stables in Newfane, VT, a certified site for Therapeutic Riding. Van transportation provided by Landmark will leave the LMC Click Center at 6:15pm and arrive back at Landmark at 8:30pm. Each lesson is 75 minutes long. Applicable transportation fees apply. Due to stable policy, there is a 185lb weight limit for this class. There are two waiver forms students must complete prior to attending the first class; forms can be found outside the PE office in the Click Center. Credits: 1
