SOC3012 ST: Food, Agriculture, and Society

Food and agriculture stand at the intersection of society’s most urgent issues: the environment, hunger and poverty, natural resource use, and public health, as well as being central to rural community development and culture. Studying food and agriculture provides a way for students to understand power and powerlessness and think about social justice. Students will explore these topics via reading, lectures, class discussion, and small group work. We will also learn about hope-inspiring alternatives to the current food system and have the opportunity, via class visits and field trips, when feasible, to meet people who are making a difference in our local community.
