SS3041 Psychology of Emotion


This course will explore the psychology of human emotion. Students’ inquiry will be guided by the following questions: What are emotions? What are the functions of emotions? How do we express emotion? What methods are used to study emotion? If we look across cultures, do we find a universal set of basic emotions? How does culture shape emotion? What physiological and neurological changes are associated with different emotions? What is the relationship between emotion and cognition? How do emotions contribute to social functioning? Can we learn to control our emotions? How do emotions relate to personality and psychological disorder? How do emotions and emotional regulation relate to ADHD, ASD, and learning disabilities? How may emotional awareness and emotional regulation enhance our life and our interactions with others? This course will be taught using lecture and classroom discussions. Students will be assigned weekly reading from a textbook and supplemental sources. Students will relate theory to research in the field, as well as to their own experiences through a variety of learning activities, including responding to reflective writing prompts, leading seminar discussions, completing summary analysis assignments, writing a synthesis paper, preparing a class presentation, and completing two tests.
